National Girls and Women in Sports Day
MACOMB, IL — Western Illinois University Athletics is set to begin celebrating National Girls and Women in Sports Day (NGWSD) on February 7, 2024. This annual observance honors the achievements and contributions of female athletes, coaches, and leaders in the world of sports.
As part of the celebration, Leatherneck Athletics will kick off a series of activities and events in February aimed at promoting the importance of sports participation for girls and women. The scheduled events include:
Feb. 10 at 1:00 pm: NGWSD at the Women's Basketball game vs. UT-Martin
Includes in-game statistics and recognitions
Local schools invited to bring their girls' basketball teams
Feb. 10 at 1:00 pm: A social for former female Leatherneck student-athletes, coaches, and administrators
Feb. 24 at 8:00 am: WIU Cheer Clinic from 8:00-11:00 am at Brophy Hall
All girl's basketball teams are invited to attend the game complimentary of WIU Athletics. Email Shelby Borchardt (sb-borchardt@wiu.edu) by February 5 to secure tickets. All girls teams are also invited to a poster autograph session following the women's game with the women's basketball team.
Additionally, on February 10, the first 200 kids 12 and under arriving to the game will receive a replica WIU basketball jersey courtesy of Refreshment Services Pepsi.
These activities aim to inspire and empower the next generation of girls and women in sports while emphasizing the positive impact of sports on personal development, teamwork, and leadership.
