DESCRIPTION:MACOMB\, IL   Western Illinois University Athletics is set to begin celebrating National Girls and Women in Sports Day (NGWSD) on February 7\, 2024. This annual observance honors the achievements and contributions of female athletes\, coaches\, and leaders in the world of sports.\n\n\n\nAs part of the celebration\, Leatherneck Athletics will kick off a series of activities and events in February aimed at promoting the importance of sports participation for girls and women. The scheduled events include:\n\nFeb. 10 at 1:00 pm: NGWSD at the Women's Basketball game vs. UT-Martin\n\nIncludes in-game statistics and recognitions \n\nLocal schools invited to bring their girls' basketball teams  \n\nFeb. 10 at 1:00 pm: A social for former female Leatherneck student-athletes\, coaches\, and administrators \n\nFeb. 24 at 8:00 am: WIU Cheer Clinic from 8:00-11:00 am at Brophy Hall \n\n\n\nAll girl's basketball teams are invited to attend the game complimentary of WIU Athletics. Email Shelby Borchardt (sb-borchardt@wiu.edu) by February 5 to secure tickets. All girls teams are also invited to a poster autograph session following the women's game with the women's basketball team.\n\n\n\nAdditionally\, on February 10\, the first 200 kids 12 and under arriving to the game will receive a replica WIU basketball jersey courtesy of Refreshment Services Pepsi.\n\n\n\nThese activities aim to inspire and empower the next generation of girls and women in sports while emphasizing the positive impact of sports on personal development\, teamwork\, and leadership.\n\n\n\nFor more information about the events outlined above\, please visit goleathernecks.com or contact WIU Athletics at 309-298-1190.
